I’m not really one for doing “DC” things, like going to the monuments and stuff like that. But I love going to see the cherry blossoms. The whole scene is so ephemeral and cloaked in stately beauty.

Bloch http://www.johnpbloch.com/?p=765 View this gallery]]> It’s tradition in my family and in Elizabeth’s family to celebrate St. Nicholas Day by setting our shoes out on the eve of St. Nicholas’ feast day (today); in the middle of the night, St. Nicholas and his slave helper Zwarte Piet 1 bring gifts to good children.

And adults. Gifts and candy for the adults too. You know; for the kids.

So we’re keeping that tradition alive in our new family. This was our first St. Nicholas day as a family, so we documented it.

We went hiking at Great Falls.

Ok, ok. So hiking at Great Falls is like mountain climbing in Kansas. 2

Anyway, we had a great time. If you’re not familiar with Great Falls, it’s a stretch of waterfalls on the Potomac to the West/Northwest of DC. Really beautiful, especially this time of year. Lots of history there too.

There are outlook spots on both sides of the river. Now, I’ve never been to the Maryland side, but it seemed to me that Virginia has the better view.

Bloch http://www.johnpbloch.com/?p=654 View this gallery]]> My wife and I went on a nature walk today. We went down part of the Four Mile Run Trail towards Shirlington. It goes through this great stretch of woods where there’s plenty of shade, a few playgrounds and picnic spots, and even some wildlife (although, to be fair, in Arlington, that mostly means squirrels).

Today, we actually saw two deer on the trail, and I managed to get a picture of one of them.
